Airlie (hosted by American University)

6809 Airlie Road, Warrenton,
Virginia 20187

Over the past 3 years, work/life concerns have increasingly taken center stage in national conversations regarding all aspects of society, from sustainability to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) to mental health, hybrid work, and what it means to take a whole-person approach in the workplace. Now more than ever, our expertise is seen as crucial to the employee experience, to personal thriving, and to sustainable and equitable culture change. As we consider our work going forward, how can we leverage our positions to foster meaningful change at our institutions and throughout higher education? How can we advocate for a more inclusive and holistic notion of care, community and connection? And how can we partner with fellow CUWFA members, researchers and policy makers to address the systemic factors nationwide that have such a profound impact on each of our communities locally?

Our 2023 conference aims to address these questions through a series of keynote speakers, panels and breakout discussions, held at American University’s Airlie retreat. Located less than an hour outside Washington, DC, Airlie is a working farm, hotel, events space, and conference center that was once dubbed an “island of thought” by Life magazine and that has long served as “an oasis for sharing ideas and solving problems”. The property’s history as a site for changemaking includes hosting the inaugural NAACP leadership conference in 1962, and serving as a location for Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to plan Civil Rights marches. As such, Airlie offers our membership an ideal space to consider our own roles as changemakers, connect with one another, and emerge inspired and rejuvenated for the work ahead.

Conference Travel & Accommodation

The entire 2023 conference takes place at American University’s Airlie Center, a spectacular property set on more than 300 acres in Warrenton, VA. Nestled into 300 rolling acres in Northern Virginia's idyllic countryside, Airlie is home to the historic Airlie House and a village of guest rooms and meeting facilities.

For more than half a century, Airlie has welcomed global leaders, heads of state, and diplomats who have convened there for conferences and programs dedicated to social progress, education, environmental research, and public health. Most notable among the myriad ideas to emerge from Airlie was the concept of Earth Day in 1969, which now has become an annual international tradition.

Given as a gift by the Airlie Foundation in 2016, American University was entrusted with the stewardship of this special property. The university’s long-term goal is to carry on Airlie’s legacy and use the facility to its maximum advantage for AU’s academic and sustainability initiatives.

Northern Virginia is renowned as an equestrian destination, prestigious winemaking region and rich historic site, all nestled into the beautiful countryside just 35 miles outside the Beltway. In addition to a variety of resort activities and amenities, guests can explore nearby Old Town Warrenton and, of course, take advantage of all the culture and history that nearby Washington, DC offers.

Accommodations

Attendees will be housed on-site at Airlie for the duration of the CUWFA conference. The discounted room rate per night is $220+ tax (includes a $15 amenities fee) and is available for the night of June 19 through June 22.
